Local authority management of the Historic Environment in NI: Learning from Elsewhere - 14th May 2015

The Northern Ireland Branch of the IHBC is holding a half-day seminar on the implications for the historic environment arising from local government reform.

Speakers from Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland will provide valuable insights into local authority management of the historic environment in other jurisdictions, the critical importance of centre-local relations in the new planning system, and the potential interface between conservation and community planning.

Confirmed speakers include:
  • Anna Irwin, Senior Conservation and Environment Officer, Wrexham County Borough Council
  • Tom Cassidy, Conservation Officer, Limerick City and County Council
  • Gavan Rafferty, Lecturer in Spatial Planning and Development, Ulster University
  • Andrew McClelland, Chair, IHBC Northern Ireland Committee
Registration and refreshments are from 9.30am. The event begins at 10.00am. Lunch will be provided at 1.00pm.

Screening of Metropolis with live orchestra at Ulster Hall - Sat 21 March

The Ulster Orchestra present a screening of the classic film Metropolis, famed for its architectural scenes, and will perform a live score to accompany the film.




The film is a spectacular work of vision and design, and deservedly one of the most famous silent films of all time. Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and examines a common science fiction theme of the day: the social crisis between workers and owners in capitalism. A dramatic, all-sensory experience, not to be missed.

Photo Diary - Family Friendly Urban Photo Walk - 7, 8, 14, 15 March 2015

As part of Family Friendly Belfast 2015 all ages and experiences were invited to join PLACE on a walk through central Belfast. With some of Belfast’s best known heritage buildings as the backdrop, participants were guided and encouraged to create stunning architectural images. The images below are from the series of walks which took place on 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th March 2015.

Belfast: Streets Ahead Phase 3 Consultation Event - Wed 18 March, 6pm - 9pm

The Department for Social Development are hosting a public consultation event on Wednesday 18th March 2015 in PLACE, Lower Garfield Street, Belfast. 

The purpose of the event is to inform the local community about the Belfast Streets Ahead Phase 3 project. The overall aim of the Phase 3 project is to design and implement public realm improvements (such as new paving, lighting, landscaping, street furniture and public artwork) that will deliver high quality streetscape and open spaces that will contribute positively to the economic and social vitality of the Belfast City Centre and will complement the Ulster University’s planned development of its new campus at York Street.

The Phase 3 project area will cover:
  • Royal Avenue (from Castle Place to Donegall Street),
  • York Street (from Donegall Street to Frederick Street/Great Patrick Street junction),
  • Frederick Street,
  • Library Square (Union Street, Little Donegall Street and Library Street),
  • Cathedral Gardens (aka Buoys Park),
  • the area around St Anne’s Cathedral (Talbot Street, Exchange Street West and Academy Street, including Donegall Street in front of St Anne’s Cathedral),
  • Great Patrick Street (part),
  • Curtis Street
  • York Lane
The consultation event will take place between 6pm and 9pm on Wednesday 18th March in PLACE, with a short presentation commencing at 7pm.

There will be an opportunity before and after the presentation to ask questions and get more information about the project. The Work of a Small Practice: An Exhibition by McGonigle McGrath

An exhibition by McGonigle McGrath: The Work of a Small Practice. This exhibition explores the processes of design and construction of projects including private houses and residential works for the charity Clic Sargent. Representation through drawings, models, construction information and photography.

The exhibition continues daily until Friday 13 March in the David Keir Building, Queen's University, Stranmillis Road, Belfast.
