LATE NIGHT ART LAUNCH
Thurs 4th Feb 6-9pm
All welcome!

Next Thursday, PLACE launches its new exhibition, produced in association with the University of Ulster. Notebooks and Narratives: The Secret Laboratory reveals the hidden world of the architect’s sketchbook. This selection of work by local, national and international architects from Ireland North and South shows the quality of ideas, observations, thoughts and reflections that are often concealed in a drawer in the studio, a coat pocket or in the individual imagination of the architect.

What ideas do we carry with us in our pocket? How do we use the ‘device’ of the personal sketchbook/notebook? How has its use changed with time and the digital age? Revealed now in The Secret Laboratory: a series of private reflections made public. The architects whose work is featured range from practitioners to writers, lecturers, critics and artists.

Featuring:
Grafton Architects Tom de Paor Shane O ‘Toole Peter Cody Ciaran Mackel Tarla MacGabhann Paul Clarke Nigel Murray Seamus Lennon Nigel Peake Niall O’Hare Michael Doherty Susie Carson Gerry Cahill Sheila O’Donnell & John Tuomey

The Secret Laboratory is a joint exhibition between PLACE and the University of Ulster, curated by Paul Clarke and co-designed and built by Niall O’Hare.

The exhibition continues from 5th Feb til 27th Mar 2010.

PLACE Primary School Curriculum Initiative 2010 - A Vision for the Built Environment as a Teaching Resource
Wed 20th Jan 2010, Linen Hall Library, Belfast

Thanks to all the teachers and built environment professionals who were so generous with their time and ideas at our pilot workshop yesterday, and of course a special word of thanks to Mark Drury (Solent Centre for Architecture + Design) and Paul Bulkeley (Snug Projects) who delivered the workshop on behalf of PLACE. We look forward to seeing the next stage getting started, when teachers will deliver their plans of work in the classroom, with the help of built environment professionals.

More info on further opportunities in this scheme will be on the PLACE website at www.place.uk.net soon. In the meantime, if you are an architect or a teacher, and you (or your practice or school) would be interested in getting involved in this scheme - get in touch! Cumberland Lodge Conference on Hope in the Built Environment

A report from the Cumberland Lodge in Windsor on its recent Hope in the Built Environment? conference.
The 2009 Cumberland Lodge conference on architecture and the built environment brought together over sixty participants. The two day programme explored how the built environment is implicated in the major social concerns of the day particularly wellbeing, sustainability and the economic downturn. A range of built environment professions and specialisms were represented amongst the participants: architects, builders, developers, academics and civil servants were present. Six students attended the conference, one an undergraduate and five postgraduates. We were also pleased to have a group of Ambassadors from the Chartered Institute of Building at the event.

Some of the themes under discussion proved highly controversial. The atmosphere was mainly convivial, but in discussion there were sometimes robust differences of opinion. We concluded on the note that we need a clearer sense of shared vision.
